How to plant an acorn tree. Scope out some good trees for collecting during the late summer so you are ready when they are. Plant the acorn in a small planter about the size of a yogurt cup. There are four steps to planting an oak tree from seed.
Push the acorns into damp compost mix one per container. Place the acorn in the dirt near the top but totally cover it with soil mix. Cover with 2 3cm of compost.
Fill a 15cm 6in pot with good potting compost to within 5cm 2in of the top. Acorns should be planted 3 inches deep into the soil which should be half potting soil and half soil from your yard. Fill these with a good quality potting soil some sources also recommend adding milled sphagnum moss.
Obtain fairly small 2 inch 5 cm diameter gardening pots or if you prefer large styrofoam cups or milk cartons for your plants. Make sure the more pointed end is facing upwards. Tend to your acorn as it grows then transplant the tree outside when it is 4 6 inches 10 15 cm tall.
If you have some compost or potting soil you can mix this in with the top third of the planting soil. It is best to collect native acorns in early to mid fall before they have fallen to the ground. Choose acorns with a dried cap and a glossy brown casing with no hint of green.
For watering purposes leave about an inch 2 5 centimeters of space at the top. Poke holes in the bottom of the planter to ensure adequate drainage. Fill a small flowerpot yogurt pot or plastic cup with peat free compost mixed with some sand or sawdust.
Water the compost so that it is damp then place somewhere in the garden where the pot will be exposed to rain and cold. Place four acorns on their side around the edge of the pot and cover them with about 2cm in of the potting compost. Collecting the acorns processing the acorns planting the acorns and irrigating the acorns.
Keep moist and transplant seedlings outside in spring. If you find one that has sprouted place it root side down in a small pot full of damp soil and water thoroughly. Plant up to four acorns in a pot that is 12 inches wide by 12 inches deep.
Plant each acorn in a pot or container. If your acorn has germinated plant it root down about an inch or so below the top of the soil. Gather acorns in autumn immediately after they drop to the ground.
After determining the proper time to plant you should select the best looking acorns plump and rot free and place those in some loose potting soil in one gallon pots or deeper containers. The taproot will grow quickly to the bottom of containers and root width is not as important. Place the rest in a sealed plastic bag filled with vermiculite or peat mix and store it in the refrigerator for 45 days.
If there is a shoot already sprouting be sure not to plant it too deep. Acorns can remain in cold storage for up to two years as long as they do not dry out.
